    Sony VP 12, BCC8, (8.1) 64 Bit, Win 7.

Following on from the stage lights question, now experimenting with using the 3d particle layer as a layer map over some text to see how it works.

I want to achieve the ‘BOXING’ text/particle effect as shown on the BCC8 Avid tutorial on the website – i.e. the particles assume the shape of the text outline of the word ‘BOXING’.

I have created a text layer with some outlined, transparent text. In the layer above it I placed an empty event on the layer and added a the 3d particle emitter effect to the empty event, set the emitter shape to layer map, and the layer-map mode to alpha, but no particles. (I also tried adding it directly to the layer with the text event on it, but still no particles)

Could someone please tell me how to setup the 3d particle emitter to achieve this effect?

    Thanks,

    Hi Stewart,

Here are the steps to achieve that effect:

    • layer the text file over a video background clip (I recommend using an 8 bit tiff with alpha)
    • move a few frames down the timeline so that you are not at the first frame of the text layer (this way you can watch the particle form as you change the settings)
    • apply the bcc particle emitter 3d filter directly to the tiff with alpha layer
    • in the PE3D filter, set the particle shape to host image layers
    • in the PE3D filter, set the image layer pop-up to source layer
    • in the PE3D filter, set the layer mode to color and alpha

And from there, animate the particles and emitter to complete the result that you are trying to achieve.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

    Peter,

Apologies – I am clearly missing something here.

I followed what I thought were the correct instructions, and what I have got so far is that each of the particles is the text from my text layer – the word ‘Sample Text’. What I wanted to achieve was to have the particles be small spheres that were attached to the outline of the text.

    Thanks,

    Stewart

    Stewart,
1- create a text using the legacy media generator in Vegas.
2- Create an outline to the text
    3- Text color transparent
4- drop the particle fx on the generated media
5- In the emitter section, emitter shape, choose layer map.
6- Emitter layer, choose source layer.
7- increase the birthrate to have more particles

Now you can see the particle only on the outline of the text.

    Guillaume,

Thank you for the response. I feel stupid here, because I must be missing something obvious. I followed your instructions, and I get the concept, but I am still only seeing default particles, and they are not attaching to the text. In case someone could have a look, I attach the VP12 project file. it only contains one track, with the legacy text effect and the BCC8 PE3D effect added.

    Many thanks

    Stewart,

Set up the particle speed to 0 to freeze them.

    Thank you – that worked.
