  • Batch-Setting Transparency (Transfer) Mode in Quicktime (not just FCP)

Does anyone know of a way to set Quicktime transparency mode for a particular piece of media other than by opening the media in Quicktime Player, opening the Properties window, selecting the Video Track, selecting the Visual Setting tab, and pulling down the Transparency pull-down? I would very much like to change the transparency mode of a whole heapin’ mess of PNG+ movies (and stills, for that matter).
While these clips are perfectly usable in Final Cut Studio apps, which are more or less smart about alphas (or at least offer some options), my media management app is smart enough to know that even though there is an alpha channel present, the transparency mode is set to None. Please no comments on your favorite media manager unless it’s OSS or you’re buying me a license and converting my years of past catalogs – the transparency change will be useful to me in more than this one app.
Is QuickKeysing these mouse actions and applying to thousands of files my best bet? MetaHoot doesn’t seem to touch transparency mode.

UPDATE: Well, I dug through the AppleScripts again and realized that I was looking for “transfer” mode, touched by “Set Transfer Mode of Track(s).scpt” – now I just have to dust off my chops enough to script a load-apply-save-repeat for a list o’ files. Anyone been there? Mebbe Automator to handle the list & run the script? Guess it’s finally time to do more than futz with the robot…

I’m posting this essentially self-answered question anyway, for your possible edification. I’d love to know if anyone here has advice on or experience with this kind of media-meta-management (yes, I use Traffic, Automotion, etc). If nothing else, moral or immoral support would be appreciated.

Uhh, do you need to do this in FCP? If so scroll to the right in your browser until you find the ‘Alpha’ column. Then select all your PNGs (you can select as many as you can) then control click the column and change the alpha from none to straight, black or white.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Jeremy, but no, I need to change the transfer mode associated with the media file itself, not just within FCP – as in the thread subject.

Now that I think I know how to do this via AppleScript, I just need to automate applying this change to zillions of files. It sure would be nice if Quicktime Player didn’t have to open & save each one, though… Ah, well, a slow-baked loaf is better than none.

Got ya, sorry for taking up the webspace. I read too fast sometimes.

Serves me right for asking a specifically non-FCP question in the FCP forum. Didn’t there used to be a (barely-used) Quicktime forum here? I guess it also serves me right for taking up web space for a self-answered question. Anywho, I’ll keep looking for apps that can change a QT file’s transfer mode while I figure out Automator. Ah, for the days of AREXX again…
