Batch convert HD files to SD
Posted by Joe Mantaratz on December 11, 2009 at 4:24 pmMy main system took a dive and I need to convert about 2 hours worth of HD 1080-60i (1920×1080, 29.970 fps) to NTSC DV (720×480, 29.970 fps)on my much slower but faithful system. Other than Vegas is there another program that can do them all at once. John Rofrano you had mentioned using a proxy but I cannot recall where I read it in the forums and think that might be a great help.
Would Gearshift be the answer?
Thanks to all….

Yes, Gearshift was designed to do exactly that, render DV Proxies from HD source for slower computers. You edit with the DV proxies, then can use GearShift to swap out the proxies for the HD to do the final render or just check, and then swap the DV proxies back in to edit some more.
Just open an empty project, start GearShift, load in your HD media files, select your proxy format, and let GearShift do all the rendering. It has a 15-day fully functional trial so you can use it for 2 weeks and see if you like the workflow.

December 11, 2009 at 7:43 pmHey John…seems like this is a week of frustration for me. I downloaded Gearshift and opened Vegas then ran the script. It opened fine then I realized I needed to be sure the properties needed to matched so I exited the program. Numerous attempts to no avail…now I get the message that my trial has expired. Shutdown, reboot, double checked date/time, no problems there. So before I purchase it I would like to actually try it. Can you shed some light on this? Thanks again.

December 12, 2009 at 5:55 pmJoe, send an email to the ultimatesupport account at vasst and we’ll figure this out. The email can be found in the readme, about box and user’s guide. We’ve seen this problem before but can’t reproduce it here so it’s a tough one to pin down. We’ll get you going.

December 22, 2009 at 5:08 amHi Joe,
In case you haven’t found a solution, I had a lot of luck with Tmpgenc 4.0 Xpress when I tried to do exactly this. I actually installed the trial version on a netbook(!) before I left on a trip and could encode using that weak CPU while traveling. Not something I would do often, but it says something about the product that it didnt crush my netbook. The resulting files were perfect (though watermarked since it’s a trial).
Tmpgenc costs $100 and I will gladly pay that when I get back to this project. It’s eacy to use and eaily the most reliable video software I’ve tried (OK, maybe neck & neck with Vegas Movie Studio). -

December 24, 2009 at 4:13 amHi:
Since i started work with Vegas 6 always capture & export with firewire, but now I need export video from timeline to SD BTCam VTR so, I need a external video capture card – like dechlink, Aja, Piro, etc – witch it’s the better choise? Actually I working with Vegas 8 and 9 OS Vista 64.
Before I used a JVC VTR like video converter – digital to analog – but now I can’t use this cause the new regulation from FCC about Closed Caption that it’s not sopported by digital NTSC but only for analog NTSC.Thanks a lot
