I have a project that involves 12 tapes that have been logged into aprox 45 bins. If I capture this project as is, I will be shuffling these tapes countless times. I can’t combine the clips, as named, into a master bin because they are not identifiable by just their names…lots of people, many cities, many responses to producer prompts…but not fully ID’d in the clip names. And, on camera was logged by one producer and b-roll by another, so the naming is inconsistant. So, I would have a mess on my hands after combining and capturing.

I thought about duplicating all the clips, moving the duplicates to a master bin, capturing and then matching back to proper bin but I’m not sure that would be any quicker.

Is there a way to select clips with the same tape name in multiple bins for a single batch capture? I looked at the Super Bin but it only displays one bin at a time…at least as I was using it.

Sorry if this is first day stuff but it’s just never come up before for me.

    Any help much appreciated.

    what a mess.
Man, unless ya start over there is no avoiding playing tape schlocker for a day.
When you batch per bin, you’ll be promted for a reel and it’ll capture all clips on that reel first.
Suonds like your woris are with those 45 bins.
    good luck with that. lol
    I can’t imagine…

You should be able to make a new bin, call it Batch.

Open your first bin (let’s call it Bin01) and select all the clips. Hold Alt (Option, I think, on a Mac) and drag these clips to your Batch bin. It will make copies of the master clips there.

    Close Bin01.

Repeat with all 45 bins until every master clip has been copied to your Batch bin.

Select the Batch bin and hit Batch Capture. It will prompt you for a tape. Put that tape in and wait until it’s done. It will prompt you for another tape. Put that tape in, etc… until everything has been batched.

Now, you should be able to delete the Batch bin, open your original bins, and all the media will be online. Done!

Test with just a few clips first to make sure it works like expected, but it should. I’ve done it this way before and never had problems.

    Grinner, Michael,

Thanks so much for the quick responses. I just tried Michael’s suggestion and it works beautifully! Suddenly this project looks managable.

The producer’s intent was to “simplify” the edit process by being able to go to a specific bin with a specific topic and grab the shot they want…not realizing they were trading “searching for a clip within a large bin” for “searching for a clip amoung 58 bins”…otherwise known as the point of deminishing returns.

    Thanks agian…

    Thanks Grinner! Much appreciated!

I’ve actually made this same mistake in the past. When I was cutting news I logged and sorted about 30 different tapes, then realized I was going to spend several days opening each bin to batch capture. Tried the “copy all to one bin” trick, batched, prayed, and it worked. Saved my butt.

It saved mine too! Thanks again Michael!

I have all footage captured and we are sitting down to edit this morning…only had to work until 8pm last night…could have easily been midnight.

    Thanks again,
    Mark
