  • batch capture error – won’t read timecode off deck

    The system:
    MacPro 8-core running FCP 6.0.1
Sony M35U deck playing HDV tapes out via HD-SDI to Kona LHe card.
Also have a firewire cable hooked up from deck to Mac.
My capture/input is: AJA KONA: 1080i: 29.97 DVCPro HD
My device control is: Firewire NTSC

    I’m going batty…

I’m in my second day of logging and capturing. Yesterday, I captured clips no problem at all from tape 1. Today, I logged clips from tape 2 and go to capture, and I have problems.

    Here’s what happens:

I select my clips. I click on batch capture. It shows the total time to be captured as :01 instead of the actual clip duration. If I try to capture two clips, it reads :02, and so on…
I click the button to continue and it rewinds the tape to the very beginning, and I get a timecode error:

“Batch Capture: Timecode Error: Unable to locate the specified timecode. You may have a specified timecode with insufficient room for pre/post roll operation.”

The clips are not at the beginning of the tape – so there’s no pre-roll problem.
Everything worked fine with tape 1.
The only difference between tapes is that tape 1 has a start timecode 00:00:00:00 and tape 2 has the start timecode 01:00:00:00 which shouldn’t make a difference.

I tried restarting FCP, restarting the deck, restarting the computer.
    I tried trashing Preferences.
I tried going to Easy Setup and configuring again.
I tried disconnecting a clip I successfully captured yesterday from tape 1. Then I went to batch capture it again, and it worked just fine.
I moved to tape 2, set in and out, clicked on capture clip and it captured fine.
I also just went through tape 2 and did some in and outs and logged test clips. When I batch capture those, they work fine.

The only thing that isn’t working is when I grab clips that I logged yesterday and today and try to batch capture them.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Liz

Just figured it out, by chance. Thought someone else might benefit from the solution.

I was using the “Film Safe” column as a checkmark box for unrelated purposes. It just so happens that all of the clips that wouldn’t capture were checked Yes in this column. Un-checking solved all issues. Batch capture is working smoothly.

Didn’t realize the check box would affect capture.

Try changing the batch capture settings from “all selected clips” to “only off-line clips”. I had a very similar issue where they deck seemed to rewind past my “in point” and keep rewinding until the beginning of the tape. For some reason, even though my bin was very clean and there were no other selected clips in the logging bin…it was trying to go to a timecode that didn’t exists. Once I changed it to “capture all off-line clips” it worked as expected.
