Batch audio level adjustment…
Hi all,
I need to make the audio levels of several programs consistent for a dvd set that I am producing. The levels aren’t all over the place, just different enough to force a volume adjustment during playback. There are about 40 programs of varying lengths from 3 to 18 minutes. Is there a way to bring the lower levels up to level “x” and the higher levels down to “x” in a few steps? The programs were originally cut and mixed on AVID symphony and I’m using FCP 4.5 to prepare the programs for encoding. DVD studio pro 2.0 to author.
I would like to adjust levels in FCP so that I don’t have to go all the way back to beginning.The audio is mainly VO with some occasional stingers.

option/apple L will let you do a gain adjustment in relative or absolute amounts. You could adjust one of the clips and then paste its audio attributes to all the other clips that you want. Does that help?

I don’t think there is an automated way to do this. Find the clips that are the volume you want. This should have them peaking on the meters around -12. Then, go through the other clips and drag the levels up or down to make them all peak around -12. They should all sound the same. Sometimes, depending on whether any compression was added to the original clips, you could have a clip peaking to -15 “sound” the same as one peaking at -12. The aim is not to have the viewer have to change the volume throughout the program.
Hopefully, each clip is consistently high or low so you can just increase its overall level by +3 or -4 or whatever. If the gain is uneven over the course of a clip, you can add nodes to your timeline with the pen tool and control your levels that way. That can be time consuming.
