  • Bass Ripple – CC Ripple Pulse? Final Cut?

Posted by Justin Whitney on December 18, 2008 at 1:29 am

Imagine a glass of water next to a large bass speaker. The music starts soft and gets louder and louder. As it does, it creates rings in the water that grow in amplitude with each beat.

This is the effect I’m looking for to go over the entire screen. So the entire image will be distorted in sync with the soundtrack.

What’s the best approach to take for this? I tried some Final Cut filters, like Pond Ripple, and it didn’t quite work as anticipated. Would CC Ripple Pulse in After Effects be a better choice?

    Thanks for the help!

    Hi,

I’d say go for the Ripple Pulse. You can tie the Pulse Level to the music using an expression so that it will automatically pulse with the music.

Right click on the music and choose “Keyframe Assistant > Convert Audio to Keyframes” and that will give you a Null layer with sliders for you to link to your Pulse Level. I multiplied the strength a little to give it a stronger effect, but my expression was:

    thisComp.layer(“Audio Amplitude”).effect(“Both Channels”)(“Slider”)*30

You can also filter your audio prior to creating keyframes to limit the pulses just to the lower frequencies.

Hope that sends you in the right direction.

    Ben

Holy crap – I didn’t even know this was possible. This opens up a whole world of possibilities. I’ll give this a try. Thank you for the tip!
