I’m new to editing FCP and want to maximize my work flow as much as possible. I’m using a iMac with 2.4ghz Core 2, 4gb ram at 667 MHZ.

First question about workflow: Should I work off of my desktop and when done xfr to storage on HD?

What can I do with my existing system to increase speed without buying a new computer?

NO it is NEVER recommended to edit from your system drive, it is busy running the OS and Applications. Always have a designated media drive.

Quite frankly you are extremely limited with an iMac. Fast media drives are always a big help in performance but unfortunately to tage advantage of those fast speeds you will need to connect the drives via a fast connection like esata but with an iMac you cannot do that. You are limited to FW800 which is about half as fast as esata or ethernet, but you will be spending a pretty penny to get one that will put out the speed that you want.

Really all you can do with your systen is add more ram if it is not already maxed out.

    Hindsight is always 1080p
