Basic Work-flow advice – colour grading and effects
Hi,
I edit as a hobby and I would love to get some workflow advice from some of the more knowledgeable folk of Creative Cow.
For an example, I have some footage that I wish to edit with transitions, music and sound effects, in Final Cut Pro. I’ll want to add some titling in Motion. And do some colour grading in Color.
What would the best workflow be for doing all that? I am aware that filters, generators and transitions will not travel to Motion. I’m not too aware of what will travel to Color. But I’m still learning that application. What I’m concerned about is the basic workflow of applying the above mentioned properties in the most efficient way.
Should I be colour grading the clips prior to editing them? I would love some general guidelines.

For the titling, I would simply import the video clip into Motion so you can use it as a place holder. Make your titles/graphics. Disable the video clip that you are using as a place holder. Save the Motion project. Then import the Motion project into FCP and drop it in the desired location in your timeline. If you need to make changes to the graphic, right-click the clip(motion project) in your timeline and select “Open In Editor. Edit your graphic and then save. The graphic should update automatically in FCP. This is the beauty of round-tripping in Final Cut Studio.
Color grading with Color will probably be your last step. Walter Biscardi made a solid tutorial on prepping your timeline for Color:

Things have changed a lot with Color 1.5.
You should visit the Apple Color forum. There is an interesting recent thread about this issue.

I thought I had responded to this post but it hasn’t shown up. Strange.
Rob, thank you very much. I like the place-holder idea. And I checked out Walt’s tutorial and liked it. It’s all relevant to me as I still have Final Cut Studio 2. It’s a neat idea and I will incorporate it in to a workflow that works for me.
Just out of interest, would the reason for disabling the ‘place-holder’ clip instead of deleting it just be so that it’s still there in case of the need to re edit it later on?

Rafael, I couldn’t find a post on color specific to this but i check out that forum quite often and I will keep my eyes peeled. Once Apple release the new Macbook Pro I may well need to know about changes to Color 1.5 as I will most likely make the upgrade.

Yup, you got it. And the reason why you don’t need to keep it enabled is because that clip should already be in your timeline in FCP. So the video clip will be on track V1, and the graphic you make in Motion will be right above it on track V2.
