basic text in FCP 5
Posted by Nectarios Leonidas on August 11, 2005 at 4:53 pmI been using FCP for a few years now. Recently I had to do some credits,
nothing fancy just basic white (aria font, size 10-12) on black background. No movement and no effects.
3 layers where as follows:one layer, left side, had the name of the artists size 10 font.
second layer, right side, had the name of the songs size 10.The last layer was on top of layer one size 12 stating header (music)
One I rendered the text, it wasn’t readable. So then, I created this as
a Photoshop file and again after rendering. Some of the artists and songs
where un-readable again.Any ideas?

August 11, 2005 at 5:03 pmAre you checking for QUALITY only on an EXTERNAL video monitor (and NOT on the computer screen?
AND have you read the following?
Great Titles with the DV Codec

August 11, 2005 at 5:59 pmYeah I checked that, and the text still looks like garbage.
Haven’t had any problems with other versions of fcp going back to 1.25..
With prior versions was doing more and text looked better..Again it’s basic text, no movement, no filters. no effects and it’s unreadable. Not sure why the text is coming out bad..
never picked up the book..
any other suggestions or do I just bite the bullet and do the text in after effects.

August 11, 2005 at 6:25 pmTry making sure that your elements are on even whole numbers in the center or origin parameters.
If you have text or graphics falling on odd numbers or non-whole numbers you are bound to get blurring or unreadable text.
IOW – Center should not be X= 23.4 Y=37.3 Intstead make it (24,38)
I would bet you see drastic improvement especially with smaller point sized fonts. This is something you should always check – don’t use the wireframe to place objects as finals, use it for temping in your layers then jump in and round off your numbers. Generally speaking the difference is so minimal from an artistic standpoint that you will never really notice any difference — other than it looking better that is!!
Good Luck

August 11, 2005 at 6:28 pmYour Motion Tab Render settings MUST be set to “Best” for the text to look good. FCP defaults to “Better” for all DV timelines, this will result in lower quality text.
Use Boris Text 3D for much better text quality than FCP’s own Text generator.

August 11, 2005 at 6:30 pmIf I understand correctly, your type is size 10? That’s your problem. Too small.

This is not a BOOK. Its a 2 minute essay on how to use type in thye DV codec.
That’s why I gave you the link. Here it is again.
If you can invest 2 minutes to read it, it might explain a lot of your problems.

August 11, 2005 at 9:22 pmI had a similar problem when working with the first version of Tiger and FCP 5. Text rendered in anything but “fastest” setting looked bad.
But with the latest version of Tiger and FCP 5 it all works out just fine using the “Better” render setting. It’s worked for titles created in the text generator as well as Live Type.

This is a setting you can change in each project. It’s under the System Settings > Video Processing. Always go with Best.
