  • Basic Questions: Connecting 2 Mics

I am brand new to the HVX, with that said — I want to do an interview that will consist of someone sitting down and this person will have a boom mic over her and there will be someone off camera asking questions with a handheld mic.

    1. Is one XLR port on the HVX better than the others for the boom mic?
    2. Is one XLR port on the HVX better than the other for the handheld mic?
    3. Can anyone think of any technical issues that I might have with this setup? Is it a problem that I am not going through a mixer?

    Thanks!!!!

    No, they are the same.

Just make sure you have the front inputs set to “mic” and not “line in” (on front of camera beside the xlr inputs) and the proper settings on the switches for mic control panel. Test it before you go out by setting it up and recording into the system.

This is better than a mixer as each input remains separate. You can adjust more in post this way. This is what it’s designed for.

    Hi, Rennie,

What do you mean by “…and the proper settings on the switches for mic control panel?” What are the “proper settings?” What is the mic control panel?

    Thank you!!!

Rennie is referring to the mic switches that you’ll find when you flip open the monitor on the left of the camera (as it faces away from you). You’ll find input selection as well as phantom power for any mic you might have that needs it. As for the line/mic switches, those are in the front of the camera on the right.
