I’m using media composer 5 and theres a few basic things I can’t figure out how to do.

-If I have a clip in the timeline how can I open it up in the source monitor? I know I can match edit but doing that doesn’t give me the out.

-I’ve copied a clip on V1 and selected V2 but when I try to paste it it pastes in V1. How do I copy a clip from V1 to V2?

-When I have 2 or more effects on a clip, lets say I added a blur first and picture in picture second, how do I make changes to the blur? When I go into the effects editor it only lets me select the most recent effect.

-I know you can keyframe color when you add the color effect plugin but I can’t figure out how to do it when using the color correction view. Is it possible?

-Lastly I mapped my keyboard so the up arrow moves me to each edit point to the left and the down arrow moves me to the right. But when it brings me to an edit point it enters trim mode. It’s a little annoying. Any way to fix it.

Thank you all for your help.

Alt or Option + C loads your selection in the timeline to the source window. From there you can map it to V2 and edit it in.

On stacked effects, you need to either step in (Check the manual for the button to step in) or, while in effects mode, double click on the shot in the timeline and it will open up the nest and you can actually affect the nested effect.

Avid’s approach to effect is different than FCP, once you understand it, your life will be easier.

In the color correction view, you need to open the effects palette (not exiting the color corrector) to work with keyframes.

There are two different ways to go to next edit with different buttons. One button puts you in trim mode, the other one will jump to next edit. Not in front of a system right now so I forget which is which. You should be able to find it in the manual.

To move to next or last edit WITHOUT entering trim mode, map “rewind” and “fast forward” to the keys you want to use.

ALT-C only works on default Keyboard layouts (where the C-key has “copy tp clipboard” mapped to it). The Win shortcut is ALT-CTRL-C, the Mac shortcut is ALT-CMD-C, regardless of your Keyboard mapping.

I thought nesting had changed in MC5 so that you could get a list up of your effects in the same style as After Effects and reposition them without going into nests? Havent seen it for myself.

while on the basics topic, after a move from an older avid to MC5, I open color correction, make adjustments, but then can never easily close the color correction window. I used to just escape and it would close, is there a simple way to close it? As well, when I first open the color corrector, the tools always hides in behind my timeline until I click on one of the three CC windows, then back on the tools. Can i just get the CC tools on top? Thanks as always
