Whenever I play a track of standard NTSC miniDV footage in FCP, it looks a bit pixellated on playback like maybe it’s at 50% quality, but whenever I pause the playhead, the image sharpens up. Why is this happening? Is there any way to have it play 100% sharp?

Monitor your footage in Full Frame/High Quality/Safe RT. Evaluate the image you see in the NTSC video monitor and NOT the FCP Canvas.

FCP is more than an app, it’s a system. Set up both speakers and video monitor out of your deck/cam and monitor from that for the least amount of trouble in judging image and sound quality as you work.

Yep, it was the RT setting in the upper LH corner of the timeline I needed to set to HIGH. Problem solved, THANKS!
