  • Basic Problem in FCP for Experienced AVID/M100 Editor (Help)

Posted by Steve Myers on November 19, 2005 at 6:16 pm

Sometimes FCP can make me feel like a novice amateur. Obviously I’ve done something wrong and the whole program is affected. I’m originally an AVID and MEDIA 100 editor, migrating to FCP a year ago.

Here’s the problem: I’ve edited a 15 minute simple video incorporating some video freezes (stills) and moving video. Its one of those projects pro bono for a Chamber of Commerce member for a solider’s Christmas greetings to send to Iraq. So the video provided to me wasn’t great to start with. However, in the timeline, it plays back beautiful.

Now, when I make a QT, to send to i-DVD, the stills play back distorted with flickering movement. I’ve burned two discs now and shreded them for the problem. I’ve even tried to print to video and edit to tape with the same problem. The video stills vibrate, are distorted, and I can’t seem to find an answer after 5 hours last night to early morning and another 4 hours this morning.

Anyone have any suggestions? I hope so – this needs to be mailed next week to arrive in Iraq by Christmas.

    Thanks in advance…

Your problem has nothing to do with FCP….it’s actually video in general.

You must realize as any editor that video is FIELD BASED and two field equal a FRAME.

Make a freeze frame and it uses two fields…if the video is moving you will notice a flicker between the two fields.

SO……Just use the VIDEO FILTERS/VIDEO/DEINTERLACE filter on your stills in the timeline to choose one field/blended version of your still.

ALso….stop simply watching your editing on the computer monitor and hook FCP up to an actual NTSC monitor to see the whole picture. You’ll have less surprises in the end.

Put the flicker filter on max on all your stills too.
