  • Basic material question

Posted by Søren Kristensen on December 5, 2009 at 11:20 pm

I’m obviously missing something very basic here…Is there any way to control a materials shadow colour? If, for instance I load the default material and adjust the brightness to 100%, the colour goes from pure white in the lighted areas to pure black in the shadows (left picture). What I want is a gradient from white to gray (right picture), or a colour other than black. Is this type of thing only doable with AO or GI, or a case of the right type of lighting?

AO absolutely not, it responds to proximal polys only, GI wouldn’t be the same it will give a much more varied (realistic) light distribution.
You could do it with SubSurface Scattering in the Luminance channel but it will make the frontside (the side facing the light) brighter too. Possibly a combo of SSS and Backlight, the only other channel shader to respond to light position – (that I can think of at the moment).
Otherwise it’s the basics, put a light in the scene that illuminates the other side a bit. No shadow so it’s evenly distributed and probably limited with the Scene tab so it doesn’t light everything.

Unless there’s a 3rd party shader out there that I’m not thinking of or am not aware of

You can control shadow color by light but not by material (other than SSS as mentioned above). What you could do is create a light with the shadow color you want and restrict it to the object.

If you want to use only one light and not have pure black shadows, you can mix in a little material>luminance, or turn on ambient in your light.
