1.) How does video imported from a HD camera such as the Panasonic HVX-200 display on a non HD mac monitor, such as the 30-inch Cinema Display while editing it?

2.) Will the quality of video be better if it is shot in HD and edited in HD and finally downconverted to SD than if it were just shot and edited originally in SD? This is assuming it is being shot on the same cam, such as the HVX-200, capable of SD and HD.

2.) What would happen if I tried to play HD video compressed as HD-DVD on a home HD-DVD player with a non HD display?

    Thanks.

All of it. You see everything.

Yes. There will be a noticable difference.

?? You’ll get the best image the monitor can give you. Not sure what you mean by this?

Using what program to play it back? Usually you can scale it to fill the monitor or shrink it to be quite small. But if you scale it to fill a monitor that is greater than the size of the video, like you scenario of watching a 1920×1080 (1080i) video full screen on a 2560×1600 display, it will start to pixelate because there enough pixels to cover it.

With the HVX200 it can, but it’s not a huge difference. But if you can shoot and edit in HD, I would. It’s part of future proofing your content. Plus if you’re doing effects and color correction, you’ll have more info to use before you down convert. That’s probably where the best advantage is.

Apart from potentially destroying the world, not much. It actually depends on if the HD-DVD play would send a HD signal or a downconverted SD signal to the TV. Send a HD signal to a SD TV and you’re out of luck. It won’t play. But if the HD-DVD play will downconvert to SD, then you’ll be fine.

1.) I know that you can not get an accurate representation of how the video will look when viewed on a computer display, though I’m wondering what it is like viewing HD video on a non-HD display. I guess I was wondering if there were any issues like the display not being able to handle it or something similar…

2.) Assuming the “noticeable” difference is positive, if you have access to a HD cam such as the HVX, is there any reason to not always shoot in HD and downconvert later to SD? Assuming that you have the space on the P2 card and the hard drive space.

3.) As for the third question, again, I was just wondering if there were any issues with a SD display trying to render HD video — any types of artifacts, etc. making it difficult to view.

    Thanks!
