Don’t have the hvx200 yet but had a question. We shoot a cooking show with 2 XL1’s and Sony pd100a. When I edit everything in the computer I notie that my pd-100a is full screen left to right but the cannons have black edges on the left and right sides. This is no problem when we air the show because it is well under the action safe zone. But it is lame when we send out Quicktime movies for clients to playback on the computer.

Now the question. Is the HVX, when shooting in SD, a full 720 or is it like the Cannons that are really 708?

    Thanks,

    -Lars

The HD clips I’ve seen are the ful width. The reduced width is due to the 720 pixels being wider than the active picture area. Due to the innacuracies in analogue video, a wider raster than necessary was built into the digital video spec to allow for room for overshoot and undershoot.

Most Bradcast cameras are 708 as well.
A good idea is to crop your quicktime files to the action safe area, as most videotographers frame by this area. excessive headroom will e visible if you just encode the full frame.

And hope that they are not watched full screen with a display that does overscan… 😉
