Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Bars and tone

    Hey,
One thing that’s really annoying, and causes problems when doing dubs etc, is when you select bars and tone, tone defaults to -12db, rather than the broadcast standard of -20.

When you do a “show package contents” on the FCP app there must be a file in there that can be adjusted to solve this problem. Does anyone know what that file is, and what line it’s on? I’ve been all through it and not been able to find it, but I thought someone else may have.
    Thanks
    Stuart

    It’s part of the preferences.

you can back it up and restore it with fcp rescue.

Are you talking about the Drive>Library>Preferences>com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
file? Because I can’t find anything in there that references tone level.
    Thanks

I would look ( if I would know how) in the lines related to “Video Generators”. The Bars&Tone are just that.

    Thanks,
That’s exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. I’ve not found a file called video generators though. In the Resources>FXScripts>Generators folder there is a file called “More_Bars_Signals” That’s the closest I’ve come to finding something like that. However, that doesn’t appear to be it. Or if it is, then that code is beyond my comprehension. I don’t think that is the file though since all the video references in that file are SD only.

Although it’s not the solution you’re looking for, it’s easy to simply go to the audio tab on the bars and type in -20db for the correct level. Its kind of a pain to do every time, but I don’t think there is an easy way to change the default levels from within the program itself.

Hey, thanks, you would kind of hope everyone does that, but unfortunately people forget – including myself 🙂 this kind of stuff is just so easy with other apps, i was hoping someone could point me in the direction of where that code is, I’ve not been able to find it in the content of the FCP app and it’s not part of preferences.

There is more than one standard. NTSC broadcast expects -20dbfs and European (EBU) standard is -18dbfs. -12dbfs is a standard of sorts but the least likely so it is annoying that FCP defaults. There is nothing stopping you having a default project with your bars and tone pre set.

Each time you start a new edit, open your default and start. Even if it is a different codec, FCP will change the setting to match your captured footage, but your bars and tone, head board and countdown will be ready to go.

Stuart, just as I said, use final cut pro rescue (free app) to backup
your preferences AFTER you set your edit to tape window to -20 for
    the bars.

It is indeed part of the preferences in that regard. Not all preferences
are accessible through parsed ascii data (text readable) files.

Actually, I’m not talking about the edit to tape window, I’m talking about he bars and tone accessed through the video generator pop up window in the viewer.
