I need to create a banner/ribbon unfurling which I will then place some scrolling text over. Is there a method to create this in AE? Or what methods would people here use to create the effect I’m after?

The only way I can see to create the effect myself is to do it in Maya and then bring the footage into AE. However I would of thought this type of effect is creatable in AE, except I wouldn’t know where to start?

This sort of effect is used a lot in commercials and because of that I thought it would be a kinda standard thing programs such as AE would be asked to create?

    Hope someone here can help.

Have you looked at Distort / CC Page Turn (with Prod Bundle / Pro versions ) for this ..?

I think Boris FX Cylinder has an unrolling feature?

Anyway, I think you should do it in Maya. AE needs plugins for 3D depth or bending, and those plugs may not be able to actually roll/unroll an object on itself.

Unrolling parchment may be a common effect, but it’s commonly (if not only) done in real 3D apps.

    my 2 cents,
    Steve

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Mike_S, CC Page Turn doesn’t appear to be in the version I have, 5.5 prod ver?
I’d love to upgrade to version 7 but money is tight at the moment and Adobe’s HUGE mark ups for us poor Europeans mean we pay almost double! Outrageous really.

Looks like I’ll be rendering it out in Maya. Glad I checked with you guys though first.

    Thanks again!

check out Joe Chao’s ribbon tute
    https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/page_wrapper.cgi?forumid=2&page=https://www.creativecow.net/articles/chao_joe/ribbonsandconfetti/index.html

i’ve just done a 3d looking ribbon flowing between houses with the effects>time>echo plug, using similar way as joe. getting text on it might be tricky at first but i’m sure it can be done, maybe with a displacement map, and a track matte mask with echo again writing out the text? haven’t tried that myself.
    good luck!
