September 22, 2008 at 8:30 pmAE’s ramp effect is 16bpc. Perhaps you used some effects that aren’t 16.
right click effects box and select show only 16 compatible. -

September 22, 2008 at 8:34 pmIt’s conceivable that it could be a limitation of your monitor causing the banding, particularly if it’s an LCD. Can you check it on a CRT?

September 22, 2008 at 8:36 pmI’ve seen this happen on LCD monitors, while the same project looks fine on a CRT. Can you check it on a different monitor?

September 22, 2008 at 9:05 pmcc spotlight (the version that shipped with ae) is only 8 bpc. cycore does have ‘hd’ versions of their plugins that are 16 bpc, but you’ll have to buy them.
you can try the old trick of adding noise to sort of dither the colors and trick the eye into blending those bands. try a little noise effect (like 5%) on an adjustment layer and see if it helps out.
also, i believe apple’s animation codec is 8 bpc, you might try digital anarchy’s ‘none16’. it’s a free uncompressed 16 bpc codec with alpha channel support… i’m having trouble finding it on their site, but i did find a mac version on version tracker….
upon further investigation, they seem to have sold things to red giant, maybe they’ll have it… not sure if it will be free though.
