Baking SPD
Posted by Justin Puda on June 9, 2009 at 10:40 pmHello,
I have a cube with an intricate displacement map applied along with some SPD. Is there a way to bake this in R11? I’ve been reading online and it seems like it’s not possible in the earlier versions of the program.

What would baking the PLA do? Would that keep my SPD? I tried using the Mograph displace deformer, however, I can’t get the intricacy of the displacement without using SPD? Is there something I can do to allow the displacement to be the same without using SPD. I’m using a cube object with 30 segments in x,y,z. Also, my displacement is making the edges of my cube to become rounded, any way for me to make the edges 90 degree angles while keeping my displacement?

June 11, 2009 at 9:45 pmI’m not really sure what you’re trying to accomplish by baking, so I can’t tell you how baking PLA might help. As far as the MoGraph deformer, it should produce similar results to SPD … assuming that you have equivalent resolution in your mesh as you had with subpoly displacement. A 30/30/30 cube isn’t going to give anything like fine detail. It would have to be five to ten times that resolution. As far as the corners being rounded, that’s probably down to the shader you’re using to displace. If the border of the bitmap or shader is 50% gray then there shouldn’t be any rounding. Otherwise the corners will displace, i.e., round.

Thanks so much for all your help. I completed the project on time and everything ended up working out great. I ended up using the mograph displace deformer, which works amazing. Thanks again for all your help.
I’ll post a link to the finished video here sometime next week.
