Baffled — Render Quality
Posted by Robert Browne on July 21, 2005 at 7:41 amOkay, normally when I render a project using the standard DV codec, it looks fine. I put together a project tonight and when I render it, it comes out looking like it was compressed with Real Video, pixelated and blurry.
I have checked my video/codec settings and they’re the same as always. Anyone know what could be causing this?

July 21, 2005 at 4:47 pmAre you previewing in less than Best, or are you talking about what it looks like during Print to Tape?

July 21, 2005 at 8:41 pmI’m rendering straight out to the standard DV NTSC template. To AVI, not tape. I’m rendering at Good, but have tried Best with no changes. The final product looks like really badly compressed crap.
When I render the same file on another machine, it works fine. So I’m thinking there’s something wrong with the machine. Maybe a file is corrupted or Vegas needs to be reinstalled.

July 22, 2005 at 2:42 amWell, it turns out this isn’t a Vegas issue, I guess. I tried looking at some rendered AVI footage that I KNOW is good and it also looked very, very bad when played in anything OTHER than Vegas. And the NEW rendered footage also looks great in Vegas.
The problem seems to be on playback with another app, like BS Player or WMP.
I suspect that my MS AVI codec may be corrupted. Does anyone know how or where I can get a replacement? I assume its on the XP disk, but is there a way to simply download and install it?

July 22, 2005 at 2:57 amCrisis averted. Amazing how much time we spend on nonsense. It turns out that it’s not Vegas, not the AVI codecs or anything like that. Instead, it’s simply BS Player and WMP Classic, which both decided to go wonky at the same time. Bizarre, eh?
Thanks for the help.

July 23, 2005 at 8:53 amAfter using a little app called Sherlock to get a detailed list of all the codecs on my machine, I noticed one called qdv.dll, the DV video decoder. I downloaded a new copy and replaced the file and low and behold, the original was corrupted.
Playback of my DV rendered files now looks fine in BS Player and MPC.
