Watching a countdown clock on a major network. …42, 41….

When 42 switches to 41, the 4 moves. The designer chose a font where the 2 and the 1 have different widths. Thus the unsightly shift in the 4 over to the right ~10px.

A monopaced or some sorta geometric font would had the 4 in 42 and the 4 in 41 align perfectly.

Do you guys consider that unprofessional?

Only in the sense that I would never do it myself. However, it is possible that the artist who created the graphic was told by a producer or art director that they must, in no uncertain terms, use that typeface, because it’s part of the station’s design package. I would almost put money on that.

I am also extremely bothered by the lack of custom kerning in on-air graphics where the number 1 is used. As any graphic designer knows (or should), there is always extra space after the number 1. I believe that it’s because digits in a font always have equal kerning. There’s a good discussion/argument here:

It drives me nuts, and I always custom kern after the number 1.
