  • Backward compatible sequences?

Posted by Eli Brown on December 27, 2012 at 2:24 pm

I have a job coming from an Avid MC 5.5 and am wondering if there is a way to do a color grade in resolve and then reconform it without having MC5.5 on my system. I have MC6, so I was planning on opening their earlier version sequence and exporting the AAF to Resolve and roundtripping back to MC6… but then, how to get that sequence back to MC 5.5? Thanks in advance for any ideas!

The rendered MXF media is compatible, and you can open sequences in earlier versions but it depends on if you are using something in v6 or later that is not available in 5.5. For the most part, I think you’re good.

    Hi Eli

Avid 5.5 can read Avid 6 projects with the limitation that if you use a MC6 feature that is not in 5.5 this will not translate.

I found this thread where several people confirm this.

Yes backwards compatability is still pretty robust despite the many recent developments. We have a lot of V5.5 to V6 & V6.5 projects moving around.

As always best to recreate a fresh project with the version of MC you are on and copy just the bins you need. Yes MXF media is compatible so if you have an effect thats not backwards supported just mix it down.

This is one of the reasons I’m so pleased Avid have resisted the easier “x” route of completely redesigning the software and breaking that compatability model they’ve protected for so long.
