Any suggestions if and how would be the best way to back up MiniDV tapes directly to a hard drive? I have Vegas Pro 9 on a 64 bit machine

Transfer them via firewire using the Vegas DV capture utility to AVI files.

Will AVI files do the same job as backing them up as M2t files?

Roger, you bring up an important distinction. When Bruce said “miniDV” I assumed he meant SD Digital Video tapes in which DV AVI file are the native format.

You are talking about HDV tapes which are also recorded onto miniDV cassettes. For HDV tapes you would capture and archive has M2T which is the native HDV format. Both of these are lossless transfers.

Thanks for that distinction. I forgot that “miniDV” is ambiguous since it can contain two different formats (DV & HDV)
