Backing up final cut projects/transfering on to external hard drives
Hi
before I got an external hard drive I digitised footage directly into my laptop,(bad Idea I know)
I have copied and pasted all my work on to my external harddrive. It took an hour to transfer.
before I delete everything off my laptop does anyone out there have any advice…
For example Will that copy the projects in their entirety or just the clips used, as I may want to reedit some of the sequences.Also im using a mybook firewire hard drive.I think it may be made by western digital but am not sure.So far it has given me no problems but you never know
Im going to invest in another harddrive , prob an alternative make in the future. Any recomendations on good reliable makes or is the brand im using fine ?one last thing. Are there any warning signs when a harddrive or computer is about to go kaput……

Copy/paste, drag and drop…if you selected the entire FINAL CUT PRO DOCUMENTS folder with CAPTURE and RENDER folders, it will have transferred everything…in those folders. If you have other things like music files and pictures in other parts of your hard drive, those won’t have copied over. Make sure you get those too. And once you delete the footage from your main drive, you will be asked to RECONNECT the media. Point FCP to the external drive and reconnect.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Audible clicking on some, others, just die.

I will give that a shot.Might test my external out on a different edit suit to see if it works before I do the deleting.

Or you can try to use media manager to do a copy of all your media and place that into a new project… the reconnection is all done buy fcp, al your files are going to be organized by media, render folders and you will not have to hunt your hard drives for all the files used, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNQQhDiDKHY

What a good idea
I have never managed to reconnect media with any success so will give that a shot.
