    I have been trying to avoid a question frequently asked but have not found an answer to it.

    I am starting to edit with FCP a full length documentary (75min) and need some advice on have to back it up while I am editing. I have edited other short (12 min) programmes and never had a problem but this one is very important and want to make sure I am “safe”.

    Here is my equipment:
    (Mac Pro 266Ghz/3GB/640GB/NVDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB
    6GB (3X2GB) RAM
    Tempo-e SATAII PCI – Express – E4P
    3 Hitachi Deskstar 2TB 3.5″ SATA II 7200rpm 32mb
    Black Magic DeckLink Studio SD/HD Video Card)

    I shoot with a Panasonic / P2 cards no tapes/HD 1920 x 1080.
    All my footage is being copied into external drives and kept away.

    Another copy is in two 2 TB drives (I have 4 internal), the third one has nothing much but software and photos.

    My intention is to save my “new project” on the 4th, still free (2TB) internal drive but also to buy a RAID drive for backing up externally. (Through the e SATA card)

    I have been advice (by the seller) about the:
    LaCie 4big Quadra 8TB / USB 2.0 / FireWire 400 & 800 / eSATA
    or
    LaCie 4big Quadra Enterprise Class/eSATA/USB 2.0/FireWire 400 & 800

    Would this be a good option?
    Any advice welcome!

    All you need to do is make sure your P2 cards are duplicated on 2 or more hard drives. Raid 1 or 5 is recommended. Shotput Pro from Imagine Products will take care of this automatically during the offload process.

    There is no need to duplicate your footage just your original P2 card data.

    As far as your actual FCP project file, set your FCP autosave vault to a location other than your system startup.

    Thank you for your quick reply.

    I have copied the P2’s. That is fine.

    My question was about the FCP new project. You said:

    “As far as your actual FCP project file, set your FCP autosave vault to a location other than your system startup”

    That other location is going to be a RAID (LaCie 4big Quadra 8TB / USB 2.0 / FireWire 400 & 800 / eSATA).
    Would that be a good option?
