Hi all.. I know this is probably a basic question, but i Just want to make sure I get it right. I just finished a project, and I want to back everything up and store it on an external hard drive, then take the originals off my main hard drive so I can have room to start a new project. What exactly do I need to save? I want to keep everything in case I ever want to pull it back up and edit again. Do I need to save just the .mov files? the project file? The sequence? I want to make sure I dont forget anything before I back it up. Thanks!

Actually reading your post again, be aware the project manager will trim your media (but not red footage) you can add handles however. In this case you may want to copy all your media and your premiere project (which includes your sequence). I recommend mirroring your folder structure on the backup as much as possible to ease relinking.

    Thanks Chris

I just noticed also in the premiere folder, there are a lot of “auto saves” and also a ton of stuff in “preview files” where there is rendered footage, do I need to save any of that?

I would if space isn’t an issue. Previews can be regenerated by re rendering but saves time if you have them. I like to have auto saves just in case I need to revisit a particular point in the edit. Cheers Chris

[David Lord] “I just finished a project, and I want to back everything up and store it on an external hard drive, then take the originals off my main hard drive so I can have room to start a new project. “

Just wondering… is your main hard drive your internal drive that also has your operating system? If so, you shouldn’t be doing that. Your media files should always be on a fast external drive otherwise you’re opening yourself up to poor performance issues.

    Cheers,
    Gary

ok, so I used the project manager to trim the clips, and Just to see if it worked, I moved the folder that had all my footage in it. (untrimmed) When I tried opening the project, premiere had to ask where all the files were, and when I went to the trimmed folder, none of the files it needed were there. I’m not sure what I did wrong.

Ahh, that’s good advice. Yes they are all on the same internal hard drive. I should look into getting a ssd, but they’re so expensive!
