Can you back up Avid projects on to dvd for future reference and to use them again to build new projects with their media or do I have to keep them in the system clugging valuable memory space?

You can back them up just like any other file. I like to zip mine up first before I do. If you don’t, and you restore the project folder straight from CD/DVD then make sure you get properties (or info) and make sure that you deslect the “read only” check box. It gets turned into a read only when written to CD/DVD. That’s why I zip first (besides making it file smaller).

No, but you can back that up as well to DVD depending on how much media you have. The easiest would be to consolidate seqeunce to a single drive wuth some handles. Then back those files to a DVD. At DV25, it will be about 5 mins/gig so a single sided DVD will hold about 22 mins of media.

DVDs are cheaper than they used to be, but why waste them? Certainly you should back up project and import files, but as long as you have the original master tapes and correctly labeled them upon capturing, you can always just delete the media files and then recapture them if needed. No point in burning through stashes of DVDs unnecessarily.

The Parhelia card actually took the video overlay of the active playback screen and sent it to the client monitor. It inserted 2:3 pulldown and when the monitors were set to 16:9 in the Avid it actually letterboxed it on output. That card did not send out the entire edit monitor – just the video.

Take a look at a program called Media Mover. It is available on a 30 day trial program. What it does is extract a specific project from the OMFI folder. It moves this project to its own folder and then you can copy the folder to DVD, another drive, or wherever. You should add the project files and you have a very neat back up. see the following link:

I believe it is $150 to buy the program after 30 days. It works with Mac and PC and many flovors of Avid from Xpress DV on up.
