In Ichat they have a feature I’ve been looking for in FCP for a long time. It’s called backdrop effects. Essentially it takes a snapshot with your webcam when you are out of frame, and subtracts that information from the image when you reenter frame. It keys out all the parts of the image that match the background that was in the snapshot. I love doing tricks with locked off cameras and split screens, and I would love to figure out a way to do this in FCP or After Effects. Does anyone know anything that works like this? or a process to do this manually?

Here is a better explanation of Backdrop effects.

    Thanks

What the ichat is doing is called “difference keying”. It compares two shots and erases any pixes that have a 1:1 match between the two shots, replacing it with alpha. Look up difference key and you should be good to go.
