I was wondering if people could share their ideas for back up. How are you backing up your media files? For instance an average project for me is about 20gigs. Using AVid for editing and Aftereffects.
we are currently backing up all projects to DVD which takes many dvds and much time.
Are people using external Hard drives to back up? is this a wuicker more effciant solution? I am just looking for faster solution to backing up files. We don’t have big money so it has to be economical also.

any suggestions? I would love to know what others are doing who work on many projects and on average budgets.

    Thanks!

If my projects are between 4 – 8GB I used to backup to DVD, but anymore I backup to hard drives. I have an external case and just pop new drives in and out as needed. I consolidate the final master sequence to the drive and copy over all music, graphics, and project files (including After Effects, etc…).

If it’s a larger project I don’t always back up the media because we still shoot on tape. If I ever have to bring a project back to life I open the project, select the sequence and hit Batch Capture. Pop in the tapes and enjoy my coffee!

If we make the transition to P2 I’ll back everything up to hard drives. Twice.

If you don’t have big money harddrives and DVDs are about all that’s available. We shoot P2 and archive with a Quantum LTO-3 (400 G/tape) tape drive which costs as much or slightly more than the camera. But we’ve had some issues with harddrives.
