I’ve been reading for days, and now i’m really lost.
I have lots of avi files taken from camcorders, and i have to apply some intensive filters such as DeShake.
I thought that converting the files to Uncompressed would be a good thing. I also tried the codec Huffyuv (supposedly lossless, but somehow smaller file size than MS Uncompressed ?!).
But, why does the uncompressed/huffy files look so bad?
There are visibly horizontal bands – will there go when i’ve finished all and output the final (as some compressed file)?Has anyone worked with DV Type 1 (Pal, 720×576)?
What was your workflow? What was your intermediate & final codecs/why?Any pointers please – i’ve gone crosseyed reading about codecs, aspect ratios, color depths, interlacing…

Update: I’ve been trying VirtualDub and its amazingly cool. With it i have done DeShake, remove Interlace, and save as Huffyuv (lossless decompressed).
So now if i can figure out how to batch all this…
And why did i buy creative suite? At this rate i’ll be a convert to freeware/open source…

Have you tried the Rolling shutter/warp stabilizer in CS6?
It should work (internally) as if the file was uncompressed.

Hi Johnny,
When you deinterlace, you lose half your resolution really. Might want to look into parameters for VirtualDub / DeShake that would give you an interlaced output with correct field order. Have you looked at the Lagarith codec? I use that with VirtualDub myself.

i only have v55 at the mo. And the WarpStabilize in AE is soooooo much slower than DeShake with no noticeable difference in results !!!
But i will try v6 as soon as i download the demos.Oh, and i dont need to worry about rolling shutter as this media is from old camcorders with CMOS not CCD (or was it vice versa, or… – dont remember, i read way too much yesterday about all that.) Bottom line – my footage does not have Rolling Shutter issues.

I did a lot of reading before choosing a codec and Huffyuv appeared to beat Lagarith in most comparisons.
I think my problem was not dealing with the interlace…I’m still not totally clear on whats the best way forward, but some type of deinterlace does seem to be the best step for my future needs…
