  avoid transcoding from encore dvd

  Hi,
  I was trying to make a dvd using HD footage ( video clips done with an hd camera and animations done with after effects ) and a menu done with photoshop. The result ( as you guys know very well ) was a desaster in picture quality. After reading a few very helpful posts I realized that I have to avoid that encore ( better said adobe media encoder ) downscales the hd footage.
  Questions :
  1) when downscaling animations from ae ( I use Pal and I want dvd for widescreen ) is avi 720×576 correct ? If yes, which compressor ( possibly freeware ) is the best you suggest.
  2) Which is the best resolution setting for Photoshop to make the menu ? Again, Pal widescreen.
  3) Can I downscale the HD video clips in AE as well like the animations, or, is there a better way ( premiere etc )
