  • Avid Xpress Pro – problems batch capturing

    Here’s my scenario.

    I have an old timeline from a Avid Media Composer machine that I have brought into my Avid Xpress Pro machine.

    I don’t have all the extra hardware that Media Composer did (especially 4 channels of audio simultaneously).

    But I have the Sony J-30 plugged via firewire into my computer. I went to the machine’s menu under “831” and set everything to capture channels 1-4.

    I’ve gone through the batch capture process with three passes now. I’ve managed to whittle down the “clips remaining” window at the end of a pass to a point where it isn’t being reduced anymore.

    I am seeing material here and there on several video tracks and here and there on all 8 channels of audio on my timeline.

    However there is still material from tapes I have already batch captured that are STILL not reconnected.

    1 of 2 things happen:

    It asks for me to insert tape “XYZ” and as soon as it threads it asks for another tape. Sometimes there are several tapes back to back like this.

    Other times it will batch capture the EXACT same footage it already has.

    I changed gears and tried to Batch Import other material it needed. I pointed it to the file location, it made the new media in my bin, but on the timeline, it still said it was offline. I tried again, and then it worked.

    It just seems like it takes several takes for Avid to finally recognize the material or something.

    Is there a process happening that I’m not aware of? I thought maybe it was actually capturing the various audio channels 2 at a time, but at the end, it barely captures any clips. After nearly 30 tapes and 74 clips, after the last pass, it only captured 2 clips.

    What am I missing here?

    Thanks.

    Hi –

    I am still having difficulties here. I am now into my third day with what should have just taken a 1/2 day.

    I’ve tried creating a new project and moving my sequence into a new bin and I batch captured EVERYTHING, unchecking the “Offline Media only” box. It still lacks about half of the clips remaining to be captured.

    Is there a way to individually select clips you wish to batch capture?

    I’ve tried isolating a portion that was offline. It asked for the tape and then came up with a box that said “Incomplete”. O out of 5 clips captured.

    Anybody have any ideas?

    Thanks.

    So I looked into the Console and found that the incoming audio was set to 32k and did not match the project (48k), so I switched the Audio Project to 32k and was able to see some results.

    However, I still have several clips left to capture, here’s the majority of what I was getting:

    Batch Capturing Clip :: ****.new.01

    •••!!!••• Batch Capture Aborted. Media Discarded.
    Error on clip ‘****.new.01’:
    Exception: A drop frame tape was inserted.
    A non-drop frame tape was expected.
    Please insert the correct non-drop frame tape.

    Batch Capturing Clip :: extra broll.01.new.01

    •••!!!••• Batch Capture Aborted. Media Discarded.
    Error on clip ‘extra broll.01.new.01’:
    Exception: A non-drop frame tape was inserted.
    A drop frame tape was expected.
    Please insert the correct dropframe tape.

    Batch Capturing Clip :: ****.new.01

    • Batch capturing Media to volume AVID MEDIA
    Discontinuous TC base tolerance = 6
    Audio sample rate of incoming media is marked as 32000
    Batch Captured Clip :: ****.new.01

    My next attempt would be to try to set my project to default to nondrop? I know I’ve dealt with the whole drop/non-drop issue before and I’ve been told I was out of luck and would just have to re-digitize that tape from scratch…

    Hopefully there’s a simpler solution out there?

    If I were you (& had the time to do so) I’d just make dupes of the problematic tapes in 48k, capture & be done with it 🙂
