Avid Xpress DV – move from PC to MAC?
Hello all,
We are in the fine cut stage of a feature length documentary and recently we’ve been offered a new G5 free of charge. I know we can install Avid Xpress DV on the G5, but are there other issues to worry about? Will Apple be able to read the Firewire drives properly? Might there be a big performance hit? Our PC is about 4 years old and could definitely use an upgrade. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Don’t tempt fate by making a big change in your system configuration in the middle of a project. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.
Either finish the project before going to Mac, or stock up on plenty of Rolaids and Excedrin.

We have had some stability issues with the PC. It’s four years old, the media drives are nearly full and we’ve basically used it nonstop in the past 18 months. It seems to me that we would be able to swap over the project folder, reconnect the drives and plug in the dongle and give it a go. If it didn’t work it wouldn’t be so difficult just reverting back to PC? That is, of course, if the drives are not formatted NTFS (which I believe Macs have some serious trouble with). Am I just way oversimplifying things here?

If you want to move to the mac, Buy an extra FW drive to move all your media over to, then copy the project over. That way, it will still exist on your PC “just in case”.
