Avid VS Rest of Editing Soft

Avid is considered ‘better’ by Avid users because of media management, multicam, stability (as long as the system is approved…).

A Final Cut Pro user would disagree, and usually with much voracity.

It really comes down to what you are cutting, the end product…

I’ll restate my analogy regarding the hammer: Would you use a sledge hammer to drive a picture tack into the wall?

You could, but it’s overkill. Same with the Avid. Are you cutting home movies? Commercials? What’s your output? DV? HD?

I guess it depends of what you have to do with the software and what kind of editor you are…

You would need a pick-up truck to haul wood and dirt and a sport car to race the track; Same thing goes with editing softwares!

I’ve worked on Discreet’s (now autodesk) fire/smoke as an editing tester in the past, after that I edited on Final Cut Pro (offline/online) with DV, HD material and my new contract is on Avid. Honestly I do prefer FCP as of now because I really don’t have much experience on Avid and I am still in the process of learning how to do stuff in this software… And even if Smoke/Fire are considered to be high-end editing systems (and I truly believe they are!), I would’nt like to do offline editing with those… But I’d love to offline in Final Cut. As for media managemen, it seems that Avid does a great job…

Each software has it’s pro’s and con’s and I guess each one has to look at what is their needs before considering any of the softwares available…

Come on now, take it easy on us FCP users! ;O)

I’ve been an FCP user since v.1, so it’s understandable that I like it better. I’ve been working on a TV show on an Xpress Pro station for a couple months now, though. I still love FCP, but I’d never say one or the other is the ultimate. Like others are saying, it really depends on your workflow, your way of thinking and your personal preference.

I love FCP because it just makes sense to me. But I’ve also been an Apple user for as long as I’ve had computers, so that might have something to do with it.

Contrary to your statement in the thread below, though, Jon, I’m a big keyboard user. I hate having to mouse and FCP is actually much faster when working the keyboard, but you’ve got to know the commands (of course). I actually find I’m mousing more in Xpress Pro, but that’s probably b/c I’m a newbie and haven’t even customized my settings yet.

Bottom line: what works for you is best. And they’re all just tools to achieve the ultimate goal: content!

I’ve got to say, I’m very thankful for the generous people on this forum. If you really can’t decide what software you want to cut with, ask yourself what kind of support community there is for it, because that becomes invaluable.
