  • Avid Video SR Raid Storage Failing?!

    Hi all,

I have a less than a year old Avid Nitris DX system with Avid’s Video SR for storage. The SR remains on all the time per Avid’s recommendations, though we were forced to shut it down a couple of times in the last few weeks due to electrical work as part of ongoing construction in the portion of the building where our Avid is currently located. These shut downs appeared to be no problem and the system was working just fine after rebooting the SR.

This morning I turned on our tower, opened MC, SR was already on. MC was functioning fine, no clips offline or anything. I noticed immediately that the SR was beeping and some LED indicator lights were flashing unusually. After a phone call to Avid tech support it was determined that possibly one power source on the SR was malfunctioning. We removed the power source box from the SR chassis to reset it then booted the entire system back up.

Upon reboot the install wizard popped asking for an install of: ‘PROMISE VTrack-SAS-SAS SCSI Enclosure Device’

I’m guessing this is related to the SR, but chose not to install yet as I wanted to be 100% positive and avoid making the situation potentially worse.

Other than this everything was functioning as normal at first, but once I opened MC I received this message immediately upon loading a project:

‘Exception: Internal error: media for offline slide was not found.’

I have received this message in the past and have determined it indicates that the media or effects database needs to be rebuilt depending on whether its a sequence or clip prompting the error. In this case it was all project content, all clips and all sequences. At this point I figured I would need to rebuild the database no problem, but then the SR started beeping again and the previous indicator lights came on again suggesting the power source was again malfunctioning. I proceeded to shut everything down again.

The same issues arose upon reboot of the SR and tower. Has anyone else experienced an SR power source failure? And or is familiar with the software which the wizard is asking to install? I was not with the organization when this new system was first established so am a bit unfamiliar with a new avid system set up process.

To be honest, this is just the most recent of a constant flux of corruptions, errors and roadblocks preventing us for doing consistent editing work. We are about done with Avid and already have one Adobe Production system, and are considering getting another.

Does anyone know if an Avid Video SR can be reconfigured/formatted etc. to function as storage for a non-Avid system?

Thanks for taking a gander and any thoughts you might have!

The AVID videoraid SR is a re-branded promise vtrak SAS array. a few questions:

    1] windows or OSX?
2] What sort of electrical work is being done? Has everything been unplugged from the wall (not just turned off)
3] Is the SR chassis on a good quality power conditioner or a UPS?
4] Did you purchase the unit new?
5] Do you have it set up for remote managment (there is a web interface – if you dont have this set up, do this NOW – this chassis is SES2 compliant, and has full onboard diagnostics.)

Hi, thanks for your response. I think I’ve got the issue solved and am waiting on a new power source from Avid. It should arrive this morning and hopefully be operational. It was great last week they sent me a replacement part that was dead on arrival.

    1) Windows XP
    2) Not sure what kind of electrical, rewiring etc.? Yes everything is unplugged from the wall
    3) Yes unit purchased new from Avid
    4) Yes we do have remote management set up, but weren’t’ able to utilize this feature due to the construction.

Do you happen to know if it’s possible to utilize this ‘Avid’ raid as storage for systems/software other than Avid?

    Thanks again!
