I just went to the Avid website to download an old version (v7.*) to use on a laptop with an old software activation i have in the cupboard, and i was a bit confused by the numbering and dates attached to each.

The last version 7 i can find is 7.07, but it says it has a release date of may from last year? AFAIK, the latest version 7 update was 2 or 3 years ago.

Then i look up top to see that there is a newer version available for my main system. (Thanks Application Manager for never telling me this)

It shows 4 current releases of Avid 8.85, 8.2.14, 8.10, and 2018.3. 2018.3 has the newest release date, which is what i would expect, as my main dongle was running 2018.1 from January. What I don’t understand is how version 8.10 is from 2017, and 8.2.14 is from 1 month ago. Why is an 8.2 version newer than both the 8.10 and 8.8 version from last summer? Is Avid updating older versions for some reason?

I don’t know for sure…, but my “guess” would be that within certian previous versions there are smaller “retro” updates.

Some systems only work with certain versions. But within a lower numbered version there may still be “some” updates that are applicable. So, if it seemed safe to Avid to update a portion of a lower number version they may have done that after they updated a higer number. Thus the update time stamp shows it was more current on a lower version number.

I’m a PC guy and Avid itself seems like a Mac in terms of limitations and updates. You deal with things THEIR way.

Avid knows that many MANY of it’s customers are “legacy” customers, meaning they won’t update past a certain version. (V6, v7). So, they will release bug fixes for those versions to keep them happy.

BTW…I cannot think of another company that does that.

Avid still supports some of there older versions of software and will occasionaly do updates to address bugs in those versions. I believe that it’s related to either older versions that are still in wide use by larger facilities or versions that deprecate there older Avid hardware. Version 5.5.5 was released almost a year after version 6 was out, this is the last version that supports the Adrenaline and the Firewire Mojo hardware. I still know people who haven’t upgraded from version 5 because of the large investments they made in Avid’s Adrenaline Hardware, so it kind of makes sense that they would do these updates.
