    Gurus,

I’m making some feature dailies that need a watermark super. Currently to render from an Avid HD 36 file on a MacPro 8 core, and add a super to create an H264 (1280×720 view copy), it’s almost twice the file run time and can’t be done in the background.

Is there any third party or faster way to burn a super from an Avid format file to H264? I know a Digital Rapids box can make multilple deliverables but I’m not sure I want that type of expense.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks, Film Joe

    Hey Joe,
I believe you can do this in Sorrenson Squeeze. Basically send your Dnx same as source file or a reference to Squeeze and then there is a watermark function that will comp it in during the compression. I have not done this myself and unfortunately do not have squeeze in front of me right now but believe it is possible this way. Best of luck.

Thanks Glen. Our team will check, they thought Sorrenson was PC only, so it does work on Macs and we might have overlooked this Avid to QT ref, to watermark in one step process.

I’ll let you know for sure tomorrow. I knew there had to be a better way.

    Thanks, Film Joe

At NAB I saw this: https://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/h264prorecorder/

$500. Real time h.264 encoding. Cool stuff.

    Glen and Gary,

First, Sorrenson can not handle the quality required. We need 2400kb and it’s top is 1800. Also we need to set for ‘fast start’ and there is no option for that in Sorrenson. I guess Compressor is the only choice? I would think Avid has some better third party options?

The Black Magic box could be good, but no specs on that as it is not in production yet.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks, Film Joe

Wow, no fast start? That’s just sad. In terms of bitrate you should be able to type in whatever you want rather than take their preset. I know I have done plenty at 5Mb in the past. I just checked the square5 site and it looks like ver 1.9.2 of MPEG streamclip can add watermarks

Personally I love this free compressor but have an older version that doesn’t do that. I will be remedying that soon.

Just found this little how-to on the streamclip method.
