    Hi there,

I have files from client’s production company that are 864×486 meridian codec that I am compiling to DVD widescreen. Should these files have been done at DV anamorphic (720×480 anamorphic setting), or is there a way I can convert them to DVD video files on my own, say through after fx or squeeze? If using AEFX, do I place them in a DV WS comp and render to DVD m2v, or in a 864×486 comp and render to DVD m2v file scaling to 720×480?

And if the videos were destined to be on DVD, why would anyone create the files at 864×486 in the first place?

    Any help greatly appreciated!

[Todd Morgan] ” why would anyone create the files at 864×486 in the first place?”

there is no reason for that. DVD widescreen in NTSC is 720 x 480 flagged as anamporph

So either the one that did the export rendered to square pixel (in that case you want new files, or it’s a trip trough AE), or only the display settings are set to 864×486, with the content being correct. QT pro can anser that for you, as can AE.
Mind you, you have to crop 6 lines to get to the DVD resolution. Crop, don’t scale!

Thanks! I thought so. I did put it through AE, into a comp set to 720×480 anamorphic, shifting its position down 3 pixels in order to align it to the top of frame. Works like a charm. Keeping the original file at 864×486 will at least allow for output to digibeta in future…

    No thanks…
Did Ae see it as a 720 file?
If so, did you set “interpret footage” to progressive, and render with the field option off?
(even if it is interlaced material, this is better. AE makes footage soft when you set it to work with fields. You must do so if you apply scaling to the image, but since you’re only cropping it is not needed)
Also, when you do so, drop the video an even (thus, 2 or 4 pixels) down to avoid changing of the field dominance…
