Hi their, I have a couple of projects coming up where I will be exporting sd clips from avid and applying various effects to them using After effects and Nuke.

My planned workflow is to export the offline media as a same as source quicktime, import this into after effects, do my effects and then once I have onlined the footage in symphony, re export the 10 bit digibeta footage and replace inside after effects. Then render the footage from after effects and bring back into avid symphony.

I have been doing a few tests exporting smpte bars from avid and then bringing them to after effects and exporting them back to avid. However I have not been able to do this without degrading the image slightly, I have managed to get the colours 99% accurate but I thought I’d ask if anyone has a problem free workflow, I have not tested this with Nuke yet but am interested if anyone has experience doing this.

    Cheers

The big questions (for me) are:
What are your render settings in AE?
What is your import in Avid?

AE: If you intend an alpha: QuickTime, Animation
    Avid: Import 601/709 color space

There should be no change in bars.

    Adding to those questions.

What are your Avid export settings?
What are the color management settings in AE?

There are several points along the journey to AE and back for the signal to get mucked up; Out of the Avid (export settings), improper color management in AE, AE render settings in AE and back into the Avid (import settings).

    Hi thanks for the replies,

I have tried a combination of export settings from avid and export settings from AE,

My closest match so far is

AVID EXPORT: Quicktime Movie 601/709: Same as source using avid codecs

AE: I have tried working in various colourspaces yet I have had most luck setting it to none.

AE EXPORT: I have tried various export settings, the most succesfull being Avid 1:1x (for some reason)

It’s frustrating as I have tried so many settings yet still failed to bring back a flawless image.

    Hope you can help me.

    All the best

I think you missed this from my initial post: what are your avid import settings?

    Ah sorry, Forgot to say

I’m importing at the same resolution that I export (DV 25 420) and I’ve selected 601 SD or 709 HD (16-235) from the options box.

thanks, I’d be interested to know if you are able to export colour bars and bring them back seamlessly from after effects. I really can’t see why it is not working/

    Cheers
