Your best bet is to print out samples of your fonts and keep that as a reference. In title tool, all you can do is select a font at a time to see whats what.
With a print out, the client can just tell ya what they want.

quick cheat if you got a relatively new version of photoshop on yer system too:

    1. export a frame of your background
    2. open it in photoshop
    3. roughly type out your text
    4. click in the character window and scroll down through fonts

man, i really hope avid gets this feature soon

There are also quick ways outside of the Avid application to proview fonts. It’s already been suggested to do a printout. One facility I’ve worked at had a small binder with sample pages for quick reference.
You don’t say if you’re on Windows or Mac; both OS’s have easily accessible utilities for quickly showing font samples onscreen. Granted it’s not as easy as having the font style right there in the dropdown menu list, but those are the available options.

I like to use a font viewer that I open whenever I make titles. There are lots around, but one I like is called AMP Font Viewer. Look for it at https://www.ampsoft.net/

I’ve always done as grinner said. When I worked in a linear suite, I had the fot pages that came with fonts for my Chyron. I would copy them, and put them in a binder so teh client could see the exact lettering of the entire font, it was also good for comparing with magezines, art work, etc. You don;t have to open another program to view just open the book, and much handier for clients to sit back and look at the choices instead of having to gather around a monitor and tell you when to change pages etc.
