We’ve had great success using Sorenson Squeeze to encode. Upload size permitting, I generally create an original size and aspect ratio reference movie. I use H.264 with a bitrate around 6Mb/s and AAC audio at 320 kb/s. I’d use VBR encoding for a piece as short as yours. You should experiment with the quality level based on the complexity of your video.

mix it down first (avid has an interlacing bug when sending to sorenson, otherwise) then export a QT reference. Import that into sorenson squeeze and encode a wmv at 500kbs. Anything over 320X240 will be fine as youtube will then make it their native rez.
Alternatively, you can export a wmv out of Avid but it’s slower and with less handles than sorenson squeeze.
