  • Avid SD to FCP HD issues !!

We always export EDLs from AVID (meridieans) Standard Def & import into Final Cut HD & then batch from D5s, usually we haven’t had a problem.
But after upgrading to Final Cut v5.1 HD, all of a sudden our EDLs from Avid are not accurate at all. Shot lenght varies randomly and placement on the timeline is also different. The sync is off. I’ve checked the EDL settings (CMX 3600) from the Avid and nothing has changed.
Does anyone know how I can solve this problem. This is basically importing EDLs from SD 29.97 to 720p 59.94. Why is the sync off ?

    29.97 SD is Drop Frame.

720p 59.94 is Non Drop Frame.

Hence the sync being off. FCP 5.1 is much more sensitive to DF/NDF than earlier versions. We just ran into this with 6 timelines sent to us in Avid OMF’s which we imported via the Automatic Duck. Had about 50% of all the shots in the show out of sync by up to a minute. I downloaded a Timecode Calculator Widget and was able to re-sync all the shots manually just fine.

Basically if your shot is out of sync, bring it into the viewer and park it on the first frame. Set the TC Calculator up for 29.97 DF and type in the TC of the In Point. Now switch the Calculator to NDF and it will display what will be the correct In Point in NDF give or take a few frames.

I know you had a dropness problem, Walter, but SD NTSC is not necessarily DF. It can be either DF or NDF.
