We have this footage that was shot on a Panasonic HVX-200 set to 16:9 SD.
Using Avid Adrenaline, I digitized one particular clip using three different resolutions: 10:1 OMF, 1:1 OMF and DV 25 411 OMF.
I am looking, side to side, at the 3 different resolutions (on a professional-grade Sony monitor).
I find it impossible to see any noticeable differences in the picture quality of the three different resolutions.
Does it have to do with a camera compression, is it a playback thing… any theories? I’m just wondering…
After all, the difference in disk space is huge.
    Thanks!

I can only guess that you shot this in DV format which is DV25 native compression. Which means your 1:1 capture and your DV25 capture would look almost indistinguishable. As for the 10:1, make sure you viewing it as 16:9 not 4:3 on the Sony monitor? You should be able to tell a difference in 10:1 and DV25. Any high detail areas should tear up pretty good with 10:1. What kind of connection is going to the Sony monitor…SDI, Component, etc.?
Also, are you playing them back-to-back? This is the best way to see a difference. If you just click back and forth you are only seeing a single field which is technically half the resolution.

Hi Michael. Thanks for your answer. I am actually playing them back-to-back. I split the screen in thirds and I am watching the three resolutions at once. Regarding the monitor, I am viewing 16:9, with an SDI connection coming from the Adrenaline box. Is it possible that it’s some kind of software thing?

Was the footage captured on tape or on P2. If it was tape it is defiantly DV25 resolution on the tape. So 1:1 and DV25 captures will look the same. I would set up the clips horizontally, not vertically, to view one right after another. Keep your eyes on a high detailed area. You should see a shift in the image quality.
Also make sure your playback is set to greeen/green.

Camera was set to standard def, so the footage was captured onto miniDV tape. I am playing back green on green. I will try out setting them horizontally. Will keep you posted. Thanks!
