Hi, I am putting new workstation together on Mac, and it will be FCP/AVID station on new MacPro. I’m familiar with FCP env and we used to work with AJA KONA3 for I/O card. My question is :

    – Do I have to buy another card compatibile with AVID or will it work with Kona3 that is planned for FCP.
    – Have you guys stumbled upon any problems when you have FCP and AVID on the same machine ?

What should I consider when it comes to hardware choices on rig like that.

    Thanks in advance

The Avid will not work with the Kona card.
    Avid software only works with:
    – Avid Mojo
    – Avid Mojo SDI
    – Avid Mojo DX
    – Avid Adrenaline
    – Avid Adrenaline HD
    – Avid Nitris DX

With the release of v5 in June, it will also work with the Matrox MXO2 Mini, but for output only, not for capturing.

I’m pretty sure that some folks are running both apps on the same machine. You have to keep in mind the system requirements (OS version, QT version) for each, and make sure they match. Wrong versions of OS and QT will cause trouble for both apps.

It is best to have two startup drives on your system, one with FCP and the other with MC. This way you can update system software, QT, etc. to match your edit system. Avid is usually behind Apple on this for obvious reasons.

yea, that is a good idea to make 2 separate partitions, but when it comes to hardware wont aja and mojo HD come into some kind of conflict ?

I made an inquiry on the forum about using and independent I/O breakout box (like the Matrox one you noted).

On a PC, using one of these boxes, I’ve seen analog material imported into an AVID Xpress version.

Am I to understand (sorry to be a bit thick-headed here) that I cannot at all use one of these devices to digitize into the AVID (MC4)?

I understand the process may not be as smooth, but I’m just curious if it can be done at all?

An additional question. Does the AVID Mojo digitize Component (Betacam SP) material at the same compression or does it import material at DV quality?

They won’t conflict. You are going to run out of slots pretty quick though.

    Correct.

If you are talking classic Mojo, it can capture up to 1:1 SD.

    Terence:

Thanks for your reply and information.

If I understood you right I can get by with the original Avid Mojo for capturing Component Betacam SP material at 1:1 SD. Other analog material (DVDs, VHS or even Hi8) can be digitized as well at 1:1, though since the original material is lower quality, I’ll “get out what I put in”.

    Correct.

One thing to be aware of. The classic Mojo is firewire based. When you are launched on the system drive MC on it, Mojo takes over the internal firewire port. You can’t connect anything else to the internal firewire port. If you have additional firewire devices, they need to go to a third party firewire PCI card that you need to install.

If you aren’t on the MC drive, it won’t matter as the drivers will not be installed to take over the firewire port, so even with the Mojo attached, you can still use the internal firewire ports.
