  • AVID offline edit into FCP = XML R3D glitches

    Hello,

I was just passed off a short film which was edited in Avid using transcoded red files (DNXHD175 1080p), I requested an AAF, R3D files, and the locked edit as well as a reference offline quicktime to check with in the conform page.

For whatever reason the editor could not create an aaf file (which is what I have read is the thing to ask for on Avid jobs) so instead they said they exported an xml or edl from avid and then brought that into FCP and reconnected to r3d files and THEN created an xml for me out of fcp. I am thinking possibly somewhere in that cluster of a workflow the problem was created?!

Its not too many shots to fix but I just want to do this correctly, they also gave me a “clean” 1080 ProRes4444 quicktime of the entire film BUT its not of course going to be R3D 4.5k to work with – I do wonder if that would perfectly match with the xml they gave me.

Mostly it seems fine but there are about shots which are totally wrong, so my question is how best can i reconnect with the proper r3d file for each shot and force the conform – I know its probably just a right click but I want to be sure I do it in the correct tab.

Side Note: its my first job with these r3d dimensions 4480×1920 square – when i imported the xml i checked the box to include sizing info – seems that the offline in conform totally matches framing however so maybe its not even anything to worry about.

ANy help on this stuff would be great.
    Thank You
    Andrew

I would recommend using an edl from the Avid and bypass going through FCP. You can import the edl directly into Resolve without any problems. One thing to be check is the edl creation. With RED footage the edl must have the 16 character option selected when using EDL manager. Hope that helps

    Hey Robert,

Ideally I am just hoping to replace those small hand full (less than 10) shots – can you explain how best to do this? Otherwise, If I cannot do that would I then just import all of the r3d into the media pool and import the edl exactly the same as I did with the xml? What if any differences should I be aware of?

I am also curious in that I have gone ahead and graded a first pass on the entire short film – what makes the most sense for workflow – I did save grades but rather than making a new project and re-apply each shots saved grade isn’t there a more sensible / fast way to import this hopefully correct edl linking to the proper r3d files and taking all of the grading I did on my first pass – creating another session which looks at the grades from my first attempt??

My inclination is to just replace the problem shots since everything else seems fine and its not even ten shots ya know?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    cheers
    Andrew

In the Conform tab, you can select a shot on the timeline and then find the clip you would like to replace it with in the Media Pool, right click and choose force conform selected clip to session. This might be the best thing since you have done most of the work already. I believe the clip you want to replace and the original clip need to share the same TC. That is how it does the force conform. (Based off matching TC)
