    Hey all,

I tried looking this up before posting so please forgive me if this has been discussed here as I couldn’t find it.

I am a FCP editor making the move to Avid. I downloaded Media Composer 3.5.1 with the hopes of getting used to the product before making the complete switch. After downloading the product I tried capturing footage for a :30 television spot that airs next week. I am having the hardest time trying to capture. With FCP it is easy. But with the Trial Version of AMC it’s difficult. Perhaps it is the equipment I am using but perhaps not. I am trying to capture footage from a Beta SX Deck (SDI) via an AJA I/O HD. Everytime I try to capture I get the “No Input Signal Present” comment even though I can clearly see video on my panasonic broadcast monitor.

    Here’s what I am dealing with…
Mac OSX 10.5.7, 2×3.0GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon, 8Gb Ram, AJA I/O HD, MBOX Pro 2.

Thanks in advance and I sincerely hope you can help as I would love to get moving on this transition as soon as possible.

the only SDI I/O capture device that works with Avid MC is MojoSDI, MojoDX, or NitrisDX.

Well, the I/O HD connects to decks and such via SDI but it connects to my Mac via Firewire. Does that make a difference? Can AMC NOT see the I/O HD even though it connects via Firewire?

That’s right. Avid software only works with Avid hardware. Media Composer, without Avid hardware, can only capture via firewire direct from the deck or camera, not through a third party card or BOB like the IO HD. If you were using a file based workflow like P2 or XDCam you could import those, but you would still need Avid hardware to monitor it.

Thanks. I will just have to wait until we purchase the MOJO. I was hoping to get a jump on the software to speed up the learning curve. I appreciate your quick (and painless) responses.

If you want to practice cutting with Media Composer or just getting used to the interface, capture your footage into FCP then import the quicktimes into Avid. You’ll have a bit of a wait for the import, depending on how long the clips are, but it will give you footage to work with.
