Avid MXF to Premiere via Pro Import AE (Automatic Duck)… but no audio?
Hi all,
I’m not sure if this is the right forum to be posting in or the Avid forum.
I’ve been brought on as an additional editor for a project that was started and cut in Avid MC 6.5 I believe. I had the editor export me an AAF of the project along with all the Avid Media Files.
Automatic Duck had issues importing the AAF straight into Premiere CS5.5, presumably because of the MXF wrapper, but Pro Import AE brought the video into After Effects CS5.5 pretty flawlessly by creating Quicktime reference movies. However, there’s no audio anywhere in the project, despite trying every audio setting in the AE Pro Import settings dialog.
I can bring the project from AE to Premiere equally flawlessly, but as there is no audio in the AE project, there is no audio in the Premiere project either, just the video edits in the sequence.
Any ideas what’s going on and how I can remedy the situation? I’m not an Avid editor at all, so I’m not even sure how to help the original editor troubleshoot.

Well, first off, if you are going to be an ADDITIONAL editor on a project, you really need to be editing with the same editing software the other editors are. Mixing NLE’s is a recipe for disaster.
Second, and this will sound harsh, how did you get hired when you don’t know how to use the NLE they are using for the project? That’s one of the main questions asked during interviews…”Do you know how to use Edit Software X?”
Third, I think (don’t quote me) that Automatic Duck for going Avid to After Effects was designed for sending footage for graphic treatment, not designed to carry audio. Meant to get all the clips as they appear in Avid, to AE for treatment, and then from AE you export a QT movie for bringing back into Avid. It wasn’t designed for what you are attempting.
Again…I would really warn against mixing NLEs for one project. How will you join the sections you both worked on in the end? QT movies? When the online happens, this would be problematic, to say the least. Or are you “taking over” from the original editor and will finish it up? Even with that, I’d say if it was started on Avid, it should finish on Avid.
