  • Avid MXF files convert to Final Cut Quicktime

Posted by Geoffrey Sledge on April 10, 2010 at 2:37 pm

    Hi-

Due to some crazy problem with my Avid mojo, Media Composer now says my license has expired. I’ve contacted my Avid reseller, but it is the weekend and everyone is on vacation.

So I am locked out of Media Composer and the material I captured there. Because I need to edit tomorrow, I will use Final Cut on my other machine.

I have a back up of most of my material, except for one day’s shoot which I loaded directly into the avid. Is there a way I can convert the Avid MXF files into Quicktime to edit on Final Cut?

    Thanks in advance.

Further clarification: I don’t need time code or online quality, or anything else. I just need a converted, viewable picture.

I’m not sure that there is a program that converts Avid MXF files to Quicktime.

I found these numbers on the Avid site regarding software activation issues:

If you are calling from within the Americas – Dial 1-800-800-AVID (2843)
If you are calling outside of the Americas – Dial +31 20 654 5530

I’d give them a call. Hopefully they have someone who answers 24/7 (unlikely, but I’m trying to be optimistic).

Also, what version of Avid are you running?

Thanks for your help! Any response is very appreciated.

I’m running Media Composer on a Mojo. PC is running Windows Vista Business.

I tried downloading the Avid Quicktime Codecs but no luck.

If you have Avid installed you should already have the Avid Quicktime codecs, but Quicktime can’t read the MXF files.

Do you have Media Composer 4, 3.5, 3, 2.7, etc? If you aren’t running Media Composer 4, download the Media Composer 4 trial. Back up your project files, uninstall the version of Media Composer you currently have, and install the trial. Activate the trial for the 30-day option and you’ll have 30 more days of Avid while you sort this out with Avid corporate. That should at least get you through the next week without having to try and convert all the MXF files for use in FCP.

After hours of searching on line, I found what I needed.

God bless the people at Calibrated:

    https://www.calibratedsoftware.com/MXFImport_Mac.asp

This program allows you to open Avid .mxf files in mac Quicktime.

Nice! I didn’t realize Calibrated’s software could read Avid MXFs. Glad you found a workable solution.

Thanks! I’ve been trying and trying to find something that would allow me to just look at Avid mxf files as a preview etc. I can’t believe it’s been so hard to locate.
